Skydweller Aero Promotes Thomas Nielsen, Ph.D., to Chief Operating Officer

Skydweller Aero is pleased to announce the promotion of Thomas Nielsen, Ph.D., to Chief Operating Officer (COO). Since joining Skydweller as Vice President of Programs, Thomas has brought more than two decades of experience in aerospace, sensing, autonomy, and mission-critical technologies to the company’s leadership team.

Leading Operations and Execution

As Chief Operating Officer, Thomas oversees program execution and operational alignment across engineering, production, and deployment of Skydweller’s solar-electric autonomous aircraft and associated mission capabilities. He brings deep expertise in program leadership, unmanned aircraft systems, defense-focused operations, and scaling organizations to execute complex aerospace programs as the company advances toward scaled production and operational deployment.

“Thomas brings an exceptional combination of technical depth, program leadership, and operational experience across complex aerospace and defense technologies,” said Skydweller Aero CEO and co-founder Dr. Robert Miller. “His leadership will be instrumental as we scale our operations, expand production capabilities, and transition Skydweller’s aircraft and mission systems toward broader operational use.”

A Career in Advanced Technology

Before joining Skydweller, Thomas served as vice president of operations at Adsys Controls, where he managed precision control systems, advanced optical perception programs, high-energy laser technologies, and unmanned systems solutions for defense and commercial markets. His earlier leadership experience includes senior roles at Mercury Systems and Physical Optics Corporation, where he built and led program management organizations and guided development across radio frequency (RF) systems, electronic warfare, sensor systems, and AI-enabled software platforms.

Earlier in his career, Thomas served as vice president of research and development at WFS Defense, chief technology officer at Quasar Geophysical Technologies, and senior research scientist at Quasar Federal Systems, contributing to work in electromagnetic sensing, underwater and underground communications, and advanced instrumentation.

His experience in advanced sensing, precision control, autonomy, and program leadership supports Skydweller’s efforts to scale operations and deliver persistent airborne capabilities to government and commercial customers.

Thomas holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in physics from the University of California, Davis, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from California State University, Chico.

Scaling Persistent, Solar-Powered Aviation

“Skydweller has demonstrated the potential of solar-electric autonomous aviation to deliver persistent airborne capabilities,” Thomas said. “I’m focused on helping the company translate that progress into repeatable production, reliable operations, and mission capabilities that meet our customers’ needs.”

Thomas’s promotion reflects Skydweller Aero’s continued development of the operational and production capabilities needed to bring long-endurance, solar-electric autonomous aircraft to customers across defense, civil, and commercial markets.
